Amos Medford Hanks is his father who was a relative of President Abraham Lincoln. His mother, Janet Marylyn was a hospital worker. Tom has two elder brothers one of them Sandra who is a writer and other is Larry who completed PhD in entomology.

Tom got married to Samantha Lewes who was an American actress in 1978. He had two children. Colin Hanks is his son who is also a actor and daughter Elizabeth Ann. Tom also married actress Rita Wilson. They have two sons Chester and Truman.
